Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  What are the minimum system requirements for the customer's pc
        to access the network?

A:  A fully functioning operating system (Windows 98 or above) and an
ethernet card or Network Interface Card (NIC). The network is
        compatible with MAC Computers.
We also recommend a personal firewall and anti-virus software.

Q:  Can multiple computers use a single connection?

A:  You can connect multiple computers within your home or business to the internet at one time. This will require a router, which is up to the customer to purchase and set up. We do restrict this type of activity to be contained within a single residential home or office. If we discover that internet sharing is being used to allow other homes or businesses to have service, your service will be discontinued as outlined in the contract.

Q:  Which service package would be best for a multi-computer
        household?

A:  The best package for your household depends on yow you plan to use  the internet. If you plan on downloading large files such as music, pictures or video files, then you would benefit from a higher speed service.

Examples:

To check e-mail and general surfing on the web - ask about 1st Gear service.

To access multiple websites and download a few larger files - ask about 2nd Gear service.

To download music and other files at the same time - ask about 3rd Gear service.

Q:  What is a subscriber module (SM) and do I have any input as to
where it will be located at my home or business?

A:  To the left is a subscriber module. The subscriber module is installed at your location and provides the link between your computer and the network.

A Reztel Broadband Installer will determine your line of sight and
recommend the best possible location based on the line of sight.
You are welcome to discuss with the installer your location
                        preference.

Q: Does the customer need Line of Sight (LOS) to get service?

A:  Yes, a clear line of sight will provide the best connection. The network is radio-based and sends a wireless signal from the tower locations to the SM at the customer location. Like radio some frequencies can go through some obstacles (e.g. foliage). Depending on the customer's location, Reztel Broadband will determine which installation method would provide the best service, or if service is possible.

Q: Will other radio frequencies in the area affect customer service
(Ex: garage door openers, baby monitors, portable phones)?

A:  The Canopy hardware has been designed to filter and modulate out other frequencies that may block its signal. Wireless devices operating in the same frequency may cause interference if they are broadcasting within the line of sight of the signal to your location or are broadcasting in a 'high' power setting. Often changing the channel on the interfering device will resolve the interference issue.

Q: How does weather affect the network?

A:  Humidity, rain, snow and wind have no tangible effect on the radios when they are operating in a clear line of sight situation. If the line of sight is passing through any obstructions the weather may have an impact. Rain or snow accumulating on tree branches or leaves may interfere with the wireless signal.

Q:  How secure is the network?

A:  Radio communication, by its very nature, is secure. The system security is maintained by two different methods:

1 - The Canopy system has 'over-the-air' DES (Data Encryption Standard)
encryption which scrambles the data to prevent 'listeners'.
2 - Reztel servers have security applications running. Customer locations
are required to install personal security systems as well.

Q:  Is the high speed wireless service compatible with VOIP?

A:  It is compatible with VOIP, however, the bandwidth requirement for the
VOIP service should be verified.

Q: Is the network used for Internet access only?

A: No - You can use the network for many other uses. For example, you could set up a wireless camera security system to monitor a business, or parking lot. Or use it to keep constant communication with a field service truck.  Please contact Reztel Broadband to discuss other service options.
